Generative Design
Generative Design
Generative Design is a technique or technology to explore design. Designers or engineers put their requirements and design goals into a design making software with parameters such as performance , materials , manufacturing methods, and cost restrictions. Software finds possible premutation of a solution and quickly design alternatives. It tests and learn from each point what will work and what will not. This is AI based design , human mind can think or focus on a single design at a time but software provides multiple designs at a time and engineer or designer select design that makes him happy.
History of Generative design
Generative design is not a new theory , its origins are not conformed , but it has been used since 1970s as a way to find solutions of complex design situations. Improvements in affordable technologies have also helped growth of this design approach that can explore hundreds of possibilities in a short period of time.
How generative design works
As compared to conventional card tools , inputs of generative design are design goals and requirements. As an output it will provide numerous designs according to your given input.
Engineers need to provide the following design goals as an input and constrains for the new part design ;
• New part connections with other existing parts
• Product size and weight
• Design interference requirements
• Load conditions
• Operating conditions
• Material information
• Manufacturing method etc.
Gd software explores all possible solutions and produce cad data for the give product according to the given input.
There are following advantages of generative design;
1. Reduced product weight
2. Improved performance
3. Reduced product production time
4. Provide various product design options etc.
Applications of generative design
As cad design , generative design also as its applications in the field of aerospace , architecture and construction industry. But at this time this technology is used only to design parts manufactured during 3D printing technology.
French designer Patrick Jouin revealed a prototype of a TAUM chair ,during Milan design week. The prototype design shows the chair is foldable and consume less material as possible.
And here the example of companies who used GD and 3D technology for the production of their products ;
1. Autodesk
2. Diabatix
3. Caracol AM
4. Anisoprint
5. Paramatters etc
Conclusion
Generative design technology is very use full technology for designers and engineers to develop ,design and to make varities of product. As we disscused human brain can not design such varities . this is why generative design and 3D technology is very important productive in making designs and products at a low cost.
